Bibliography

There are many books on Shotokan karate, and as mentioned in the page on Styles in karate, there are many subtly different versions of Shotokan, so it is important to make sure that the books you choose are appropriate for your own studies. If in doubt seek the advice of your sensei.

The following books will be useful for keen students of karate wishing to supplement the instruction received in the dojo:
Cook, Harry (2009) Shotokan Karate A precise history (2nd ed.), Martial Arts Enterprises, 3 Castle Hill House, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, NE 49 0EB, UK.
Kanazawa, Hirokazu (trans. Berger, Richard) (2004) Karate fighting techniques: The complete kumite, Kodansha International, Tokyo, Japan. ISBN 978–4–7700–2872–3
Kanazawa, Hirokazu (trans. Berger, Richard) (2009) Karate: The complete kata, Kodansha International, Tokyo, Japan. ISBN 978–4–7700–3090–0

Also, there are very many supplementary resources for students on the world-wide-web, for example on YouTube. In addition the Shi-Gaku-Kan dojos have a dedicated Youtube channel which contains videos of Sensei Nobuaki Kanazawa and Sensei Mark Donaghy demonstrating kumite drills. Students are recommended to subscribe to this channel in order to be notified when new videos are added.
